Gearing up for a summer of sport and the winter World Cup

As the Premier League season and Europe’s elite leagues draw to a close for the summer, many will feel like there’s a sport-shaped hole in their lives over the coming weeks.

However, big sporting events are back with a bang this summer – including the UEFA European Women’s Championship (6–31 July) – and a great line-up of international events no matter your sport of choice.

Whether it’s the 24 Hours of Le Mans (11-12 June), Wimbledon Championships (27 June – 11 July), or Tour de France (1-24 July), there’s plenty on offer in the summer months.

The 122nd United States Open Championship at The Country Club, Brookline, Massachusetts (June 16-19), is another major attraction for travelling sports fans. Last year’s memorable tournament saw Jon Rahm become the first winner to birdie the final two holes of the championship since Tom Watson in 1982.

Europe’s top football clubs also have one eye on preparations for next season and will be making the most of lucrative pre-season tours.

The sports travel requirements are global in reach – with teams including Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City heading back to the US. At the same time, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain will tour the Asia-Pacific.

Demand soars for the first winter World Cup

Looking further ahead, many people will also use the coming weeks to plan for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which kicks off on 21 November at the Al Thumama Stadium when Senegal takes on the Netherlands.

The tournament always entails a packed schedule with complex travel arrangements – including charter flights for players, teams, corporate sponsors, media and fans.

The air charter industry plays an essential role in World Cup travel, from private jet charters for individual athletes to wide-body aircraft for squads or supporter groups.

With travel schedules and flight requirements dictated by the group stages, knock-out matches, and games subject to delays and extra time, few events have as many variables as the World Cup.

Flights, tickets and accommodation

FIFA has reportedly faced colossal demand with over 23 million ticket requests, but concerns remain over scheduled flight arrangements and where fans will stay for the tournament.

Although Doha has invested heavily in infrastructure and hotel accommodation for the world’s largest sporting event, jet-setters are already snapping up short-term luxury rentals in Dubai and other locations as a base to travel to and from Qatar for games.

ACC Aviation’s expertise in bespoke travel across the Gulf region is already proving in high demand – with a fully-managed charter service offering more convenience and flexibility than scheduled airlines – with more control over timing, flying to and from the most convenient airports.

With the benefit of charter aviation, the tournament is set to provide a welcome opportunity for some much-needed winter sun for many fans, doubling up with family holidays and luxury breaks in the region.
