Confused by when you are and aren’t supposed to leave a tip? You’re not alone. While tipping is not mandatory, it is common and even expected in many situations when someone has provided you with a service – whether the doorman at your hotel, taxi driver, or restaurant server. This leads to the question, are you supposed to tip a private jet pilot and cabin crew?
While scheduled commercial pilots don’t get tips, our charter specialists are regularly asked about the etiquette when flying privately.
Should you tip a private jet pilot?
As with many things, there is no hard and fast rule regarding the etiquette or ‘jetiquette’ of tipping pilots.
Cultural differences can also apply. For example, in the Middle East, private jet passengers will sometimes tip very generously if they like the service – and have even been known to offer jewellery and other luxury items.
Tips in North America and some European countries are always appreciated, although the amount varies greatly. Many US customers don’t tip pilots, but offering something in the $50-100 range is fairly common.
Corporate pilots are typically paid well for their flying experience and professionalism – but some do go above and beyond for clients.
More so than other commercial pilots, they are required to be highly flexible and ready to fly at a moment’s notice. A private jet pilot may be required to travel for a day or weeks at a time, depending on your itinerary.
Particularly in the case of smaller aircraft, pilots are often required to undertake a number of additional tasks – including loading luggage and equipment onto the aircraft, serving passengers, and cleaning the cabin between flights.
Should you tip a private jet cabin crew?
In addition to the pilots, there may be others who help ensure a smooth and relaxing flight. Working as a flight attendant on a private jet is a role that combines traditional cabin crew skills with five-star service to ensure a safe, comfortable and enjoyable trip.
As with pilots, tipping the cabin crew is appreciated but not expected. The more touch points you have with a particular crew member, the more appropriate you may feel it is to tip. You may wish to show them your gratitude if they have gone the extra mile – whether it’s helping to keep your children entertained or assisting with bulky luggage.
Again, the important thing to remember is that there are no set rules when it comes to tipping. Some passengers prefer to tip the crew every time they fly, while others leave a larger tip at the end of a holiday or multi-leg business trip.
